Lone Star High School Rodeo Association-- the beginning --The Lone Star High School Rodeo Association had its beginning in October of 1974 in response to a need to provide the sport of rodeo to the young people of Dallas and several adjoining East Texas counties. Through the concentrated efforts of several dedicated parents, the organizational work proceeded. The initial steps in this organizational effort were taken by Gene and June Parish and Billie Ogletree through the establishment of a state charter. Organizational work proceeded through late 1974 and early 1975. In June 1975 letters were mailed to high schools in the metroplex and surrounding areas announcing the formation of the association and asking for their support. The first finals were held in the Texas State Fair Coliseum in 1975, with the 25th finals being held at the Henderson County Fair Grounds in Athens, Texas. The Championship Finals will see the top 15 contenders in each event competing for trophy saddles, year end buckles and finals average belt buckles. This association was established to promote the sport of rodeo and encourage higher education for high school students in the northeast Texa area. It requires its members to pass at least two-thirds of their grades, as well as awarding a college scholarship to one senior cowboy and cowgirl. Throughout the years, there have been many members that have gone on to participate in the larger Rodeo Associations, including PRCA. There have even been some who have gone to the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) and the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Finals in Las Vegas. Lone Star has continued to thrive and grow through the dedication of adult individuals who have given their time and energy to support the young people who are members of this association. Mr. & Mrs. Parish and Mrs. Ogletree are still a valuable part of this association and they wish the very best to all who compete in LSHSRA.
